ENGL 60 - COLLEGE WRITING PREPARATION - (3 UNITS, 4 HOURS PER WEEK FOR THE FULL SEMESTER)
Prerequisite: Acceptable score on placement test, ENGL 58 with a grade of "C" or better, or ESL 186 with a grade of "C" or better.

English 60 covers basic English skills - grammar, punctuation, the paragraph, and the short essay - and is designed to prepare students for ENGL 100. Although sentence level skills are necessary for composition, critical thinking is also important. Students will learn different organizing strategies to develop ideas into logical, clearly written essays.

ENGL 100 - COLLEGE WRITING - (3 UNITS, 4 HOURS PER WEEK FOR THE FULL SEMESTER)
Prerequisite: Acceptable score on placement test, ENGL 60 with a grade of "C" or better, ENGL 95 with a grade of "C" or better, or ESL 186 with a grade of "B" or better.

English 100 is designed to develop reading, critical thinking, and writing strategies necessary for academic success. The emphasis is on writing expository essays, both in-class and out-of-class, some of which will require research and documentation skills.

ENGL 103 - CRITICAL REASONING & WRITING - (3 UNITS, 3 HOURS PER WEEK FOR THE FULL SEMESTER)
Prerequisite: ENGL 100 with a grade of "C" or better.

English 103 is designed to continue developing critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The course will focus on the development of logical reasoning and analytical and argumentative writing skills.

ENGL 97/247 - MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE- (3 UNITS, 3 HOURS PER WEEK FOR THE FULL SEMESTER)
Prerequisite for ENGL 247: ENGL 100 with a grade of "C" or better.

English 97 is the study of multicultural literature, by both immigrant and Native American writers, which explores varied responses -- ethnic, gender, and regional -- in the cultural context of a diverse society.

English 247 is designed to enrich students' lives by exploring the multicultural literary sources of America that contribute to the cultural history and development of contemporary American society. ENGL 247 is not open to students with credit in ENGL 97.
