What is UTAP?

The University Transfer Achievement Program (UTAP) is a year-long learning community that focuses on helping students succeed academically so that they can transfer on to the four-year colleges and universities of their choice.

In UTAP, students get a comprehensive introduction to the college system and to all of its available resources, such as counseling, tutoring, and financial aid. UTAP students take classes, attend field trips, and participate in social activities together. Doing this creates strong bonds of friendship and support between the UTAP students and faculty. This type of support is what really defines a learning community. In UTAP, students are not left to "go it alone." There is always someone there to offer their support.

What is a learning community?

Learning communities are small groups of students who come together with dedicated faculty to work and study together. The UTAP classes share a common theme which is explored through assignments, field trips, and projects. Each class lends its own perspective to the theme by looking at it through a different discipline. This approach provides students with an opportunity to have a deeper engagement with the material.

How does the program work?

UTAP links several classes together each semester. Students attend the UTAP classes as a cohort, meaning that UTAP students take these classes together as a group. The classes share assignments, field trips, and projects, but students earn a seperate grade in each class. Because these classes are tied together in this way, students must enroll in all the UTAP classes.

By building a strong community of learners, UTAP is able to stregthen students' academic skills, provide support, friendship and fun, and assist students to reach their transfer goals.
