The benefits of UTAP start even before the fall semester begins
College can be an intimidating environment. There is so much that new students need to know about, such as how to apply for admission, how to chose the right classes, how to register for classes, how to buy textbooks, etc. Knowing the answers to these questions and getting support in the process empowers students to do well in college. This information and support is the primary key to student success.
As soon as students commit to entering UTAP, they receive this assistance and support. Prior to the beginning of the fall semester , UTAP does a registration orientation where faculty and peer mentors help students select classes, register online, and apply for financial aid. At this time, students get a tour of the campus, so they will know how to find their classes. They also meet the other students in the program so that, from the first day forward, when they walk into the classroom, they will be greeted by familiar, friendly faces.
In UTAP, students also have the advantage that all of their UTAP classes are guaranteed. This means that each semester, students have three classes already locked into their schedule. They will not have to compete with upperclassmen to get a seat in these courses. This will make it easier for students to build an effective class schedule.
