Go Go Gutenberg.  

Project Gutenberg has been converting literature to digital format for a while.  It's a noble quest.  Imagine all books digitized so every kid with access to a public library has access to almost every book he or she might ever need.

Raymond Carver's Cathedral

The title story of this collection is stunning. The epiphany reached by the narrator may remind readers of Joyce's epiphanies and Flannery O'Connor's revelations.  But Joyce's and O'Connor's stories leave their characters emptied. We see them after their awakenings as hollow— hollow as we imagine Hopper's nighthawks to be just after they leave the diner and begin walking home. In Carver's tale, however, we get the feeling the narrator is looking over into a promised land—that he will see more clearly the possibilities and beautiful things in life.

Warm up to "Cathedral" with "Feathers" and "Fever."  In "Feathers" read the passage describing Bud and Ola's baby at least three times. Know that you will never read such a verbose and Then, to really understand one of Carver's primary ideas, read "The Bridle."  So many of Carver's characters seem to be "victims" of the many "bridles" life has placed upon them.  There is a brief passage in this story that may articulate the Carver character's circumstance more clearly than any critic might..

DVDPLANET.COM—a DVD giant.  The general selection may not be as complete as that at Amazon, but the prices are very good here.
