Fulfills the diversity requirement for graduation.

Southern California is one of the most diverse regions in the world. This diversity presents challenges and difficulties that affect our daily interactions with others. Speech 120 offers the student the opportunity to acquire skills to help bridge the gap across cultures. It also allows a greater understanding of what culture is an the role that it plays in our lives. The course focuses on the cultural and social differences between racial and ethnic groups. It examines the differences in communication styles between cultures. This is not a performance course. No formal speeches. Two exams, two 4 page papers and a major interactive activity are the major assignments. It is a lively, student centered course with class discussions, simulation activities and group experiences.
