Dr. Barbara Marshall
English 60 is a course designed to prepare students for English 100. The
emphasis is on expository writing including paragraph structure and essay
development. The fundamentals of English written expression are reviewed.
Prerequisite: Acceptable score on placement test, English 58 with a grade of
"C" or better, or ESL 186 with a grade of "C" or better.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Generate ideas about which to write
- Write paragraphs with unity, substance, and clarity that support the main idea
- Formulate a thesis statement and organize paragraphs into a logical sequence
- Develop effective sentence structure and variety
- Modify and revise drafts and proofread for errors
- Identify and correct errors in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, usage and grammar
- Apply critical thinking skills needed to compare, contrast, summarize, analyze and evaluate in writing
